PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN CLASS INFORMATION SHEET

A phlebotomy technician is a medical technician who draws blood for analysis.

Requirements:

  • Fill out the Ben Franklin Application
  • FAFSA- Fill out the Financial Aid application at fafsa.ed.gov Students need to list Ben Franklin Career Center on the FAFSA. School code is 013732. The school year is 2022-2023. (Must be filled out to determine financial aid eligibility for any and all scholarships and grants)
  •  PT HEAPs application 
  • $200 non-refundable deposit must be paid no later than two weeks prior to start date (IMPORTANT: Deposit holds seat on a first paid/first reserved basis and pays the $75 application fee and $125 book fee. Students wishing to GUARANTEE a seat in the class should pay the deposit when sending in application.)
  • Copy of High School Diploma or GED and copy of Photo I.D.
  • Health insurance card or signature on liability waiver
  • Entrance Exam – TABE Test (Reading and Math)  
  • Agreement to submit to a drug screen before clinical experience
  • Covid vaccine card (2 vaccines required before entering clinicals)

Class Starts:  January, 2023 (exact date TBD) 5:30 p.m.  

Class meets:  In classroom 2 nights a week, Monday and Wednesday  5:30 to 8:15 p.m.  Clinicals  Monday - Friday, 8 hours/day; daytime hours are required for the clinical experience.  Two additional classroom dates following clinicals: TBD (for the final exam) and TBD (graduation) Total:  225 hours

Entrance Exam:  Photo ID required to be admitted into test, receipt from exam payment, #2 pencils and a calculator.

Special Note: Admission to the Phlebotomy Technician class is based on test results as compared to other candidate’s courses. Class size is limited!! There will be an orientation on the first night of class to clarify requirements of the course.  Clinical experience hours will be set at that time, but students should plan for last 3 weeks/M-F 8hrs/day. 

***IMPORTANT NOTICE: At this time COVID vaccines are required by all clinical partners of the Garnet/Ben Franklin Career Center  Phlebotomy Technician program for all student participants in the clinical settings. This is a requirement of the healthcare facilities and not of Garnet Career Center of Kanawha County Schools. Clinical experiences are a required part of the program; therefore, all students must participate in the clinical portion of the program.

Financial Aid: Available to those who qualify.  FASFA must be completed for 2022-2023 school year at FAFSA.gov to be eligible for financial aid. Financial aid available will not cover all program costs. (Ben Franklin School ID for FAFSA: 013732)

The Financial Aid Specialist is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the main office.  Part-time financial aid funding is allotted in the fall and spring, divided among all scheduled programs and all eligible students on a first come, first served basis.
