Garnet Career Center is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) authorized by Congress under the CARES Act. The signed Certificate and Agreement for Funds under Section 18004 (a)(3) was returned to the USDE on July 15th, 2020. Garnet intends to use the funds received under Section 18004 (a)(3) of the CARES Act for expenses incurred, including lost revenue, reimbursement costs for expenses already incurred and technology costs associated with transition to distance learning due to the coronavirus. Garnet has awarded no less than 50% of the amount received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act for Emergency Relief Grants for students. Garnet will receive a total of $500,000 from the USDE.
Funds from the CARES Act Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) Section 18004 (a)(3) was received August 6, 2020 in the amount of $351,485. Garnet Career Center has divided the allocation into 3 categories: expenses incurred, including lost revenue; reimbursement costs for expenses already incurred; and technology costs associated with transition to distance learning. The reimbursement and technology costs will be divided into PPE & Safety/Health Maintenance supplies and equipment; Curriculum-virtual and electronic; and Equipment for facilitation of distance learning. We are excited to announce an initial allocation of approximately $6,000 to these expenses. Further allocations will be updated as they are processed.
The total amount of grant aid awarded to students from section 18004(a)(1) of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds from the CARES Act was $104258 to 136 eligible students who attended Garnet Career Center during the Spring 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic or who had started their Fall 2020 enrollment between July 1, 2020 and September 4, 2020. Funds were divided among eligible students. Approximately 136 students were Eligible students who received CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid payments under section 18004(a)(1) . Allocations to students were made in the form of relief checks mailed at the end of the 4th quarter for the 2019-20 school year and at the end of the 1st quarter for the 2020-21 school year.
Checks were mailed to students, who were notified by email and Schoology post that funds had been distributed. 136 eligible students received CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid payments under section 18004(a)(1).
An eligible student is a Spring 2020 student who was actively enrolled in an Automotive Technology, Practical Nursing, or Business program as a full time student or eligible part time Phlebotomy student or a Fall 2020 full time student who is actively enrolled in an Automotive Technology, Practical Nursing, or Medical Assisting program between July 1, 2020 and September 4, 2020, maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress according to the program guidelines, has been actively participating in our Emergency Distance Learning activities, is a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen as defined by Federal Title IV regulations, and is NOT in default on a Federal Student Loan.
Guidance from the Federal government indicates that these funds will NOT be considered taxable income and will not impact a student’s eligibility for other Federal or State benefits a student may be entitled to.
