Garnet Career Center is located in downtown Charleston, WV on Dickinson Street (one block from the Exit 100 Capitol Street ramp off I-64). Garnet has been operated and funded by Kanawha County Schools since 1971. The building was constructed in 1929 and served as a senior high school for black students until 1956. The building has been placed on the National Registry of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.
Garnet Career Center serves adult learners through career and technical programs which offer the opportunity for students to gain a new career. These programs include Automotive Technology, Phlebotomy Technician, and Practical Nursing. Our students are provided with an education that will make a difference in their lives. The instructional staff is committed to our students in building technical skills, developing positive workplace attitudes, and assisting all students in becoming successful.
Garnet Career Center also serves the adult learner through the Adult Education (ABE) Learning Center. Adults may attend the learning center to develop reading skills, improve language, and advance their mathematics. Many adults use the learning center to prepare for taking the TASC® test. Participating in the learning center and taking the TASC® is offered as a free service to the general public. Garnet also provides English as a Second Language (ESL) services to our community as well as offers part-time, short-term and evening classes.
